Pre-placement Training for Foster, Adoptive and Kinship Caregiver - Series # 4 (Session 4/12)

Session 4:   Attachment, Separation & Placement

This workshop explores the development of normal, healthy attachment in children, and the negative impact of separation from primary parents, siblings, and other important people.  Trainees will also learn methods to help reduce trauma for children who have experienced separation.

* Session is 3/4 required classes to become a Beech Acres Parenting Center Respite Provider.

Butterflies and Blue Ribbons

Foster families and the public are invited to the annual "Butterflies and Blue Ribbons" event at at Krohn Conservatory.

The event celebrates the hard work of foster parents.

There will be a butterfly show at 4:30 p.m. for families.

Session 5:   Managing Behavior

This workshop explores the potential reasons for behavior problems in foster and adopted children.  Agency policies regarding corporal punishment will be discussed, including the underlying reasons for these policies.  Trainees will be given information on other ways to manage behavior, including using natural and logical consequences, contracting, and rewards.

* Session is 4/4 required classes to become a Beech Acres Parenting Center Respite Provider.

Session 6:   Preventing and De-Escalating Crisis

This workshop explores the triggers that might generate feelings of anger or fear in the caregiver or the child, resulting in family conflict.  Techniques to resolve conflict through win/win, rather than win/lose, negotiation, will be presented and practiced.  Participants will learn strategies to prevent crisis from developing and will learn methods to de-escalate crisis, if necessary, while keeping all family members safe.

Session 8:   Primary Families

This workshop provides information about the losses typically experienced by families, expected behaviors and emotional reactions, and the grief process.  Trainees will learn ways to work effectively with primary families.
